Easy in phase setting...

To get the whole quality from your hi-fi or Home Theatre system, it is important to proceed to a in phase setting of the connected elements. The procedure is relatively simple. It makes it possible to reduce the mass currents circulation in the mains cable to a minimum of voltage. These mass currents disturb audibly the transmission of analogical and digital signals.

Preparation:

  • For this procedure you need a high impedance digital Voltmeter. (Available at Hi-fi Cables & Co. Price Including VAT: 35 €)
  • Use a multi socket power strip, type Schuko without ground nipples which allows to reverse the direction of the mains connectors. (Available at Hi-fi Cables & Co. Price Including VAT: 15 €)
We suggest the help of an assistant who will reverse de connectors while you measure the difference in voltage between the connected items..
  • Remove all audio and video cables from your hi-fi or Home Theatre system.
  • Switch on all items. They must be connected to the Schuko multi socket power strip (see above)
  • On your Voltmeter, select the position "alternative volts" often stylized by the symbol V~
  • The in phase setting must begin with the amplifier if the preamp is integrated, with the preamp if separated from the amplifier.

Procedure:

  1. In one hand hold one probe of the Voltmeter. This one must touch the outside of the RCA base plate of the amplifier or preamp. Make sure that you do not touch the amplifier frame. With the other hand touch the extremity of the second probe. Note the displayed voltage.
  2. While you maintain in place both test probes ask your assistant to reverse the direction of the mains connector. The amplifier or preamp must remain switched on.
  3. Position the mains connector in the direction where you noted the weakest tension and which will be used as reference for the other items. Do not change any more the direction of the mains connector of the amplifier or preamplifier initially regulated.
  4. To carry out a perfect phase setting of all items, proceed successively, on each one, as follows:
  5. Again with one of the probes of the Voltmeter (any), touch the outside of the RCA base plate of the amplifier of reference, with the other the outside of the RCA base plate of the apparatus to be put in phase. Position the mains connector in the direction where you read the lowest votage.
  6. Once all items are in phase, switch them all off.
  7. Place now all audio and video connecting cables.
  8. Switch on all items
  9. Now you can listen to a hi-fi system profiting from a perfect phase setting.
